How to Measure Your Pupillary Distance (PD)
What Is Pupillary Distance (PD)?
Pupillary Distance (PD) is the distance, measured in millimeters, between the centers of your pupils. This value ensures your lenses align with your eyes’ optical centers for clear, comfortable vision.
Why PD Matters
- Ensures proper lens alignment
- Prevents visual distortion
- Improves clarity and comfort when wearing glasses
How to Measure Your PD at Home
Tip: Average PD for adults ranges from 54–78mm. Measure 2–3 times for accuracy.
Step 1: Prepare
Stand about 8 inches (20 cm) from a mirror, or ask someone to help. Hold a millimeter ruler against your brow.
Step 2: Align Left Pupil
Close your right eye. Align the 0 mm mark with the center of your left pupil.
Step 3: Read Right Pupil
Open your right eye and close your left. The mm reading aligned with your right pupil is your Total PD.
Step 4: (Optional) Measure Dual PD
Measure from each pupil to the nose bridge:
- OD – right eye
- OS – left eye
Add both for your Total PD.
Final Tips
- Repeat the process and take the average
- Use natural light to reduce pupil dilation
- Seek professional help for children or complex prescriptions
